The community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Breanna Sprenger, a local Paralympic swimmer and passionate disability advocate, who died on May 1 at the age of 23 following complications from a recent surgery. Her death marks the passing of a remarkable young woman whose courage, talent, and advocacy work left a lasting impact on those around her.
Born with no legs and only one arm, Breanna faced incredible physical challenges from the very beginning of her life. Yet from a young age, she chose to focus not on limitations, but on possibilities.
Her resilience and determination propelled her into the national spotlight in 2013, when at just 12 years old, she earned a spot on the U.S. Paralympic swim team and competed in the Parapan American Games in Montreal, placing sixth in the women’s 50-meter backstroke.
Her appearance at that international event was more than a personal achievement—it was an inspiration for countless others living with disabilities. Breanna often shared her story openly through social media and in interviews, particularly with The Chronicle-Telegram, where she spoke candidly about her experiences, struggles, and dreams.
Her voice was powerful and authentic, offering hope and encouragement to young people with disabilities, their families, and broader communities. She believed deeply in advocating for inclusion, accessibility, and dignity for all.
A proud 2019 graduate of Avon High School, Breanna remained active in her community throughout her life. She served as an ambassador for the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities, where she played a vital role in raising awareness, representing the voices of individuals with disabilities, and helping to drive programs that empowered others.
Her empathy and commitment to service led her to pursue a degree in social work at Cleveland State University, where she hoped to continue making a difference in the lives of others.
Despite the physical challenges she faced, Breanna embraced life with remarkable energy and optimism. Whether in the pool, in the classroom, or in her community, she demonstrated time and again that strength is not defined by physical ability, but by spirit, determination, and love for others. Her journey was a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of representation.
Friends, family, teammates, and community members have expressed deep sorrow over her sudden passing. Many remember her as a beacon of light, a fighter, and someone who made everyone around her feel seen and valued. Her sense of humor, compassionate nature, and unwavering positivity left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered.
Breanna’s life was short, but it was full of purpose. She broke barriers, challenged stereotypes, and changed lives. She was more than an athlete—she was a role model, a leader, and a symbol of what is possible when determination meets heart.
The legacy she leaves behind will continue to inspire future generations of athletes, advocates, and individuals with disabilities to reach for their dreams and speak their truths.
As the community grieves this tremendous loss, they also celebrate the extraordinary life of Breanna Sprenger—a young woman who swam against the current and showed the world what true strength looks like. She will be dearly missed, but her story and spirit will live on in the lives she touched and the countless people she inspired.
