Lane Alan Pruett, a vibrant and beloved 15-year-old from Holton, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. Born on May 18, 2009, in Topeka, Kansas, Lane was the cherished son of Benjamin Alan and Shelby Lee (Duncan) Pruett. His sudden passing has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the entire Holton community.

A sophomore at Holton High School, Lane was deeply involved in various school activities. He participated in football, wrestling, the Notables choir, Future Farmers of America (FFA), and the PVR 4-H club. Lane was also a proud member of the “Burger Gang,” a group that embodied camaraderie and school spirit. During the summers, he served as a lifeguard at the Holton Swimming Pool and was an active member of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church. Known for his ever-present smile and positive demeanor, Lane’s enthusiasm and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Lane’s family includes his loving parents, Ben and Shelby Pruett; his two younger sisters, Emeliya and Gemma, whom he adored; paternal grandparents, Mark and Vickie (Lierz) Pruett of Holton; maternal grandparents, Dora and Noel Clark, and David Duncan, all of Holton; and great-grandmother, Monie Wheeler of Holton. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.

To honor Lane’s memory, a visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton, followed by a Rosary at 7:00 PM. The funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Holton High School, with burial to follow at Holton Cemetery. In a tribute to Lane’s unique spirit, the family requests attendees to “Live Like Lane” by wearing shorts with cowboy boots to the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lane Pruett Memorial Fund, which will be designated at a later date, and sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436 .

Lane’s untimely death has deeply affected the Holton community, where he was known for his generosity, infectious smile, and unwavering commitment to helping others. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him to live with kindness and integrity. As the community mourns his loss, they also celebrate the joy and light Lane brought into their lives.
