It is with profound sadness that the West Point High School community in Cullman County, Alabama, mourns the untimely passing of 16-year-old Christopher Owens, a beloved sophomore and junior varsity basketball player. Christopher tragically lost his life in a single-vehicle accident on County Road 940, leaving behind a grieving family, school, and community.
Christopher was the son of Becky Drummond, a respected biology teacher at West Point High School. His death has deeply affected not only his peers but also the faculty and staff who knew him both as a student and as part of their extended school family. Principal Heith Yearwood expressed the collective sorrow, stating, “We are all saddened by the loss of Chris. Not only did we lose a student, but with Chris being the son of one of our teachers, this is especially hard for our faculty, staff, and community.”
Known for his dedication on the basketball court, Christopher was remembered by JV Basketball Coach Mason Voce as someone who was always eager to improve. “Chris was always going to be the guy who texts me on Saturday, asking if he could get in the gym. He wanted to be great and understood the time and effort it was going to take,” Voce recalled.
Beyond athletics, Christopher was an exemplary student, achieving all A’s and participating in the math team and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. His commitment to excellence and his positive demeanor made him a role model among his peers.
In response to this heartbreaking event, the school has implemented its crisis response plan, providing counseling services to students and staff affected by the tragedy. A vigil is planned to honor Christopher’s memory, allowing the community to come together in remembrance and support.
The loss of Christopher Owens serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the profound impact one individual can have on a community. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and excellence will continue to inspire those who knew him.
